p. 99 in the Sacred Sites searching for Book of Mormon Lands
The words "black, dark, filthy, and loathsome" are synonymous in the book of Mormon. They describe the spiritual condition of people who forsake the commandment of God. The words "skins" and "garments" when used in a spiritual context, refer to one's inner sou, such as, "the Lord did cause a skin of blackness to come upon them" (2 Nephi 5;21) or "unless ye shall repent of your sins, their skins will be whiter than yours" (Jacob 3;8), or "their skin became white like unto the Nephites" (2 Nephites 2:15). And the Lord promised through Nephi, that in the latter days the "scales of darkness" would begin to fall from their eyes and they would become a "pure and delightsome people" (2 Ne. 30:6)
6 And then shall they rejoice; for they shall know that it is a blessing unto them from the hand of God; and their scales of darkness shall begin to fall from their eyes; and many generations shall not pass away among them, save they shall be a pure and a delightsome people.
